A couple of nights ago, my friend Sivakumar Venkataraman (Siva) pinged me on Messenger about an issue he was having. He was in the process of upgrading a customer’s site from Microsoft Business Solutions – Great Plains 8.0 to Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0, and after the upgrade none of the users were able to log into Dynamics GP. The only exception was the ‘sa’ user.
My first thought was … Security.

Over the years, I have seen many requests for Windows Authentication support for Microsoft Dynamics GP, and I have to say I have mixed feelings about it. In theory, it sounds good, but in practice it may be a threat to your customer’s financial information security.
Regardless of authentication method, users will still have to select a company to access which defeats the purpose of having a single sign-on.

With password policies in place in Dynamics 10.0 RTM, it was easy to be able for your user to ‘lock themselves out’ after a mistyped password or two.
Because Dynamics GP doesn’t give you any kind of warning that the Caps Lock key is enabled, the user wouldn’t necessarily notice this is the real issue and not a typo and all of a sudden you are locked out.

I hope to answer all these questions and more by explaining the password encryption that is used by Microsoft Dynamics GP for all users except ‘sa’.
