Friday Funny: Project Management

David Meego - Click for blog homepageAfter working in the Microsoft Dynamics GP world as a partner consultant, developer and support engineer for the last 25 years or so, I got to see a lot of Project Management.

I got to see a lot of things go right and just as many things go wrong. I saw projects completed on time and projects miss their deadlines. To quote one of my favourite authors, Douglas Adam, “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.”

I think that the cause of almost all issues with project management is miscommunication, and the following graphic just sums it up.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageAs I am getting ready for Christmas, I wanted to share some important information on how the *Santa* ®™ brand can be used in the community.

In the same way that many corporations have guidelines on how their brand and logos can be used, so does the *Santa* brand.

Please read on to make sure your use of *Santa* is compliant. We would not want any legal proceedings to spoil your holiday season.

Friday “Not” Funny: Stop Autonomous Weapons #bankillerrobots

David Meego - Click for blog homepageToday’s “Off Topic” article for the Friday Funny spot is actually not that funny. It is very thought provoking and as a person who loves technology and the good things it can do, this scares me as it shows how technology can be used in ways that are not so good for humanity.

I mentor at the robotics club for the school that my sons attended and am a committee member for Robocup Junior Australia (WA). I love robots, but only when they help make our lives better.

Friday Funny: Don’t Say Velcro

David Meego - Click for blog homepageI am flying to Nashville, TN, USA today for GPUG Summit and the pre conference Dexterity and GP Power Tools training I am presenting. Here is something fun, but with a serious underlying message.

A few days ago, the company that 40 years ago invented the “hook and loop” fastening, Velcro, released a funny video begging people to stop calling the fastening “Velcro” regardless of who actually made it.

They are trying to address the issue where the name of one of the most popular brands for a product becomes synonymous with the product itself. This becomes a problem as it is difficult to maintain a trademark when everyone is misusing the brand name. There is a legal ruling about not being keep a trademark that has become part of the common language.

The Pseudo Science of Computer Software Bugs – Part 1

David Meego - Click for blog homepageEvery developer out there tries to write perfect computer software code.

Well, if they are not trying to write perfect code, they should be.

So, what is perfect code? One would hope it is code that functions as it was designed to. Even better if there are actual documented specifications and the software looks and behaves as described in the specifications.

Friday Funny: Yet another Mathematical Challenge for you

David Meego - Click for blog homepageIt has been a while since I posted a Friday Funny post or a puzzle for you to solve. So today this shall be rectified. Here is something to keep you entertained as I travel to Fargo, ND, USA for the Microsoft Dynamics GP Tech Conference 2017.

The following Mathematical Challenge is one that is causing confusion all over the interwebs and is one which I believe can have two legitimate answers. However I would argue that only one of those two answers is actually correct.

Friday Funny: Bicycles built based on people’s attempts to draw them from memory

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is from a little while ago (March 2016), but it is hilarious… especially if you enjoy cycling like I do.

Before you read any further, let’s start with a challenge: Grab a pen and a piece of paper and draw a men’s bicycle from memory, include as much detail as you can.

How did you go? Could your drawing actually work

#FabrikamDay is today or is it?

David Meego - Click for blog homepageToday is the 12th of April 2017 (at least it is already in Perth) and is now known in the Microsoft Dynamics GP community as “Fabrikam Day” thanks to the Training Dynamo herself, Amber Bell.

While most customers set up a test company based on their live company’s data, partners including ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) and sales & support consultants have usually used the Sample or Lesson company that comes with Dynamics GP to demo and test.

April Fool: The terrible truth about Dihydrogen-Monoxide

David Meego - Click for blog homepageI am not usually someone who goes on about the environment and saving the planet. I do believe in minimizing pollution and using limited resources efficiently. I also think that we should do our bit to bring down our carbon emissions even though it will hurt our economy, while the economic powerhouses of less developed countries use their cheaper labour and non-existent pollution restrictions to take up the slack.

However, I just learned about Dihydrogen-Monoxide (DHMO) and I am absolutely horrified.

So Yesterday was Pi Day, or was it?

David Meego - Click for blog homepageWhile working hard yesterday I came across a post shared on the Book of Face by my friend Denni Conner. It showed the mathematic constant of π (Pi) played as a song and was an interesting approach to try and memorize the sequence of numbers.

The post said it was Pi Day because the date was 3.14 and that the celebrated time was 1:59 PM as that gave the number sequence 3.14159 which is Pi to 5 decimal places and the most that “normal” people can remember. If you can remember more digits that is great, but you are in a minority.

Friday Funny: Star Wars: Downunder

David Meego - Click for blog homepageIsn’t YouTube a wonderful time waster. I came across an awesome Star Wars fan film that I just had to share….

Star Wars: Downunder is a 30 minute Star Wars fan film which finally answers the age old question, that has confounded many a film buff before: What would happen if you crossed Star Wars with an Australian beer commercial.

Answer? Star Wars Downunder: an epic tale of the good, the bad and the thirsty. Directed by Michael Cox and written by Bryan Meakin and Michael Cox, Star Wars Downunder, is half an hour of action, special effects and lovable Aussie larakins
