Anyhow, this article is not work related. I would like to ask for your support for a great fundraising project that is very close to home.

#MSDynGP Don’t Believe All The Microsoft Sales Hype

David Meego - Click for blog homepageLast week, I was having an email conversation with a partner friend in New Zealand and he mentioned that he had recently gained a number of existing Microsoft Dynamics GP customers from larger partners (VARs) who have decided to de-emphasize their Dynamics GP line of business.

My friend’s comment was this was short sighted and that it was sad when the fight for a quick dollar overrides the value of a long term relationship. His comments prompted me to write this “opinion” article.

Friday Funny: More on AFL: Australian Football League

David Meego - Click for blog homepageToday for the Friday Funny article I have decided to revisit a topic I posted about three years ago…. Our national sport: AFL or Australian Football League or Australian Rules Football or Aussie Rules or just Footy.

I am originally from the UK and was only introduced to AFL when I arrived in Australia as a 13 year old in 1981. I have never been a huge sports fan, but enjoy watching skilful athletes playing regardless of the discipline or code. FYI: We have seven football codes in Australia: Aussie Rules, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Football (Soccer), Gird Iron (American Football), Gaelic Football and International Rules (a Gaelic football & AFL mashup).

I wanted to share AFL with you again after my recent trip to Fargo when I showed some videos to one of the staff at the hotel and he was amazed by what he saw. It seems that many people outside of Australia mistakenly believe that Rugby is the biggest football code in Australia and don’t realise that AFL is completely different from Rugby (even if the ball is a similar shape).

Friday Funny: It’s true, Toilets do flow the other direction in Australia

David Meego - Click for blog homepageFor many years, when I have visited the US for conferences, there is always someone who makes a joke about the toilets flowing in the other direction in Australia. I am not talking about back up (unless there is really bad flooding), but the direction of the rotation as the water flows down.

The answer is yes, it does flow the other way. It is called the Coriolis Effect or Coriolis Force after the French Scientist, Gaspard-Gustave de Coriolis who wrote a paper on the topic in 1835.

Friday “Not” Funny: Stop Autonomous Weapons #bankillerrobots

David Meego - Click for blog homepageToday’s “Off Topic” article for the Friday Funny spot is actually not that funny. It is very thought provoking and as a person who loves technology and the good things it can do, this scares me as it shows how technology can be used in ways that are not so good for humanity.

I mentor at the robotics club for the school that my sons attended and am a committee member for Robocup Junior Australia (WA). I love robots, but only when they help make our lives better.

Friday Funny: Don’t Say Velcro

David Meego - Click for blog homepageI am flying to Nashville, TN, USA today for GPUG Summit and the pre conference Dexterity and GP Power Tools training I am presenting. Here is something fun, but with a serious underlying message.

A few days ago, the company that 40 years ago invented the “hook and loop” fastening, Velcro, released a funny video begging people to stop calling the fastening “Velcro” regardless of who actually made it.

They are trying to address the issue where the name of one of the most popular brands for a product becomes synonymous with the product itself. This becomes a problem as it is difficult to maintain a trademark when everyone is misusing the brand name. There is a legal ruling about not being keep a trademark that has become part of the common language.

PSA: The No More Ransom! Project

David Meego - Click for blog homepageFollowing on my previous Public Service Announcements (PSA) about scammers and user credential hacks, today I have one on ransomware.

A while back, I posted a warning about Backups and Cloud Storage and how ransomware and in particular crypto viruses could destroy your cloud backed up files if they are automatically synchronised with your local files.

You are still safest to have a back up on a drive or system that is not always connected, and avoid getting ransomware on your system.

PSA: Microsoft will never call you or ask you to call them

David Meego - Click for blog homepageRecently, I posted an article: Friday Funny: Fake Microsoft Scammer Tries to Scam Ex Microsoft Employee, where an ex-Microsoftie had some fun with a scammer using a virtual machine which could be damaged without any actual risks to his computer.

Today, I came across a scam site that could catch the unwary. So I decided to write this Public Service Announcement (PSA) article to help keep people safe.
