Just a quick note to keep you informed. I have been summoned to appear in court next week and so will be out of the office from then for an unspecified amount of time.
I am unable to provide any details about the case or how long it will take before I am fully available again.
We will be able to respond to emails during this period (8th April 2019 onwards), but there might be delays for which I apologise for in advance.
Please bear with me as I go through this difficult and frustrating time, but there was no way I could avoid this and if I don’t appear I would be in even more trouble. You get fined if you don’t show up for Jury Duty.

If this is an April Fools post, ignore this… if not, and your jurisdictions are anything like ours, self employment is often a standard acceptable reason to be excused from jury duty due to the lack of income while attending to those duties.

In Western Australia, you used to be able to get excused if you were self employed. However, that is no longer allowed. Your only option is a deferral for a maximum of six months, and you can only defer once. The idea that this should be enough time to get things sorted. They will pay you whatever you can prove would be the income you would be missing. This change is probably to stop Juries only being made up of unemployed people and pensioners.
I actually deferred it one week from 1st April to 8th April so I could attend training for the internet safety program I volunteer for (http://ThinkUKnow.org.au) which is only run once per year. If I deferred to any later that would be into the conference season which would not work.
I can’t avoid this, so it is best to get it sorted as early as possible.
