Following on my previous Public Service Announcements (PSA) about scammers and user credential hacks, today I have one on ransomware.
A while back, I posted a warning about Backups and Cloud Storage and how ransomware and in particular crypto viruses could destroy your cloud backed up files if they are automatically synchronised with your local files.
You are still safest to have a back up on a drive or system that is not always connected, and avoid getting ransomware on your system.
Unless you have been hiding under a rock somewhere, you would have heard about Pokémon GO.
Pokémon GO is an Augmented Reality (AR) game for Android and Apple devices that brings the world of Pokémon (made famous by the Nintendo games) into the real world. The game has had both positive and negative feedback in the mass media, but primarily has been responsible for getting many people out and about walking around, getting fit and interacting with others.
But if you don’t own an Android or Apple device, you have been unable to join the fun…. or have you?

Today, I came across a scam site that could catch the unwary. So I decided to write this Public Service Announcement (PSA) article to help keep people safe.
While we are highlighting videos of really cool technology from Microsoft, a video on Hololens Holoportation was recently published and it also shows amazing possibilities.
Microsoft Research have taken the three dimensional camera technology to capture people and objects in an environment and combined this with the Augmented Reality ability of the Microsoft Hololens to display the captured virtual people and objects in your field of view at a remote location.
Last week, to coincide with the Build 2016 developer conference, Microsoft’s YouTube channel released a new video demonstrating the Microsoft Cognitive Services APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) being used to create a Seeing AI (Artificial Intelligence) app.
This is a great example of why I love working in the technology and computer industry. To see technology being used to make people’s lives better and easier is what gives me hope for a future where computers improve our lives rather than making us work harder and be more stressed.
This is just a quick note to wish everyone in the Microsoft Dynamics GP community and all my friends and readers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

While David was away in the USA and Mexico, I got to accompany Rohan to the RoboCup Junior Australia 2015 National Championships on 26th and 27th September 2015. You may know from past blogs that robotics has been a bit of a hobby for David and our sons. This year, being in the National Competition meant travelling to Gawler, South Australia.
One year ago on 17th October 2014, I left Microsoft after thirteen and a half years and restarted the consulting business that I had before joining Microsoft.
Winthrop Dexterity Consultants was formed in September 1999 and when I joined Microsoft in December 2001, my wife Jennifer continued to run the business for almost five years before the Omni products were acquired by Rockton Software. The business as a Microsoft partner was put on hold at that time. When I found out I was leaving Microsoft, I restarted the business as Winthrop Development Consultants.
Today, 6th October 2015 at 10:00am US Eastern time in New York City, the Microsoft Windows 10 Devices Briefing took place and it was an extremely polished presentation that introduced the world to the new Microsoft Devices for Windows 10.
I have been involved with the Great Plains / Microsoft Dynamics GP Community for many years and for much of that time I have been friends with some of the most knowledgeable and helpful people in the community.
A number of these friends have been recognised by Microsoft for their contributions by being awarded Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) status.
I am a bit late getting this blog post written, but I have been extremely busy with the release of my first commerical product, GP Power Tools, as well as other development work that was pushed back to allow me to complete the product launch.
So, on top of all the development work I have been doing, I have been continuing with my volunteer role as mentor for the All Saints’ College Robotics Club. The club meets after school every Friday afternoon during term time for one and a half to two hours and currently has about 30 students attending.
The results of the last year’s worth of work by the students was put to the test at the RoboCup Junior Australia 2015 WA State Championships held at Curtin University Stadium on the 7th and 8th of August.

Windows 10 is now here and starting to install on PCs that reserved their free upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
It is already the 29th July 2015 in Australia and Windows 10 is almost here.
I know that because it is already downloading into a hidden C:\$Windows.~BT folder onto my machines.
Today (25-April-2015) is ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.
ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day.
