David Meego - Click for blog homepageWelcome to the fourth article in the series of articles that explain in detail the steps to add a user defined custom field to a window using Modifier, Report Writer and GP Power Tools to add the business logic.

The series should be read in order starting with the introduction article:

In this article we will use GP Power Tools to add the business logic to make the URL field work. We will make the hidden button open the URL in a browser window and add https:// at the beginning of the URL field if it is not added by the user.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageWelcome to a series of articles that explains in detail the steps to add a user defined custom field to a window using Modifier, Report Writer and GP Power Tools to add the business logic. The example project will only need six scripts and no external development tools will be required.

The aim of this series is to work through each of the parts of the process and explain with step by step instructions how it works and why various settings are used. The final article also includes a step by step video.

It would be possible to just show the final result, but I want this series to serve as a guide for creating similar customizations in your own system. That said I will provide the final customization files at the end of the series.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageI have been back home about a week since the Great Vic Bike Ride 2019, which was an amazing experience. I am planning on posting some additional blog articles with actual maps and elevation/speed graphs as well as photos and video footage from the 700km bike ride. Stay tuned…

In this article, as we approach the end of the year, I wanted to highlight one of the best moments of 2019: the User Group Summit in Orlando in October and especially the #GPPTSelfie Twitter competition that Winthrop Development Consultants ran during the conference.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis is an issue that I found back in April 2019 and reported to Microsoft. I added it to my list of articles to write up where it sat until today. Now that I have seen it happen “in the wild” and not just on my test system, I thought I better spend some time to get it documented.

The error occurs when launching Microsoft Dynamics GP and can happen on any version since about v8.0. When you launch GP it displays the Dexterity Login Dialog and if you don’t log in, it will generate a couple of error dialogs.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageIt has been two years since a new GP Power Tools full demonstration has been recorded to video. Today, I have uploaded a new one hour GP Power Tools demonstration based on the Build 27 release, along with an extra 8 minute video with additional Developer Tools module examples.

Thanks to the team at InterDyn Artis, especially Margaret Bolding who asked for a GP Power Tools demo for their team and Paul Haag who organised the recording.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageGuess what? … there will be no Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R3, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2019 or Microsoft Dynamics GP 2020. Why? Because in early October 2019, we will have Microsoft Dynamics GP instead.

That’s correct, the year will no longer part of the version name for Dynamics GP. In fact version 18 will be the last version of Dynamics GP (in the same way that Windows 10 is the last version of Windows).

David Meego - Click for blog homepageAfter attending the User Group Summit Australia conference in Melbourne in August 2019, I feel compelled to write another opinion article.

The conference was fantastic with over 600 attendees for the inaugural event with lots of great local and international presenters as well as many exhibitors and sponsors.

But the number of Microsoft Dynamics GP customer sites represented was extremely low and quite disappointing. After investing time and money to attend and exhibit at a conference, it feels like a missed opportunity when the target audience is barely represented.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageSorry about the click bait title, but it got you to read this opening paragraph. This article is my opinion on Microsoft’s current marketing strategy for its Dynamics accounting/ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) product range and how, with a couple of minor changes, Microsoft can convert all of its Microsoft Dynamics GP customers to Microsoft Dynamics 365 solutions in due time.

To understand what the problem is and what the simple solution is … read on …

David Meego - Click for blog homepageHave you ever had to do an upgrade of Microsoft Dynamics GP and the SQL Server has already been upgraded to the latest and greatest, but now when you attempt one of the upgrade steps, you get a SQL Version error for Dynamics Utilities.

The wording of the error message is along these lines:

Your current SQL Server is not a supported version.

Req: Microsoft SQL Server 11.0
Act :Microsoft SQL Server 20XX (RTM) – XX.0.XXXX.XXX

You need to upgrade to SQL Server 11.0 before continuing.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageEarlier this month there was a thread on the Microsoft Dynamics GP community forum which described an issue where there were too many menu choices showing after logging into Dynamics GP.

The issue is not a bug, but standard behaviour in Microsoft Dynamics GP which was causing some confusion for users at the customer’s site.

[Edit] This functionality is now built into Build 28 of GP Power Tools as an option in Administrator Settings.

It has been prompted by the issues seen because the redistributable version of VBA that is packaged with Microsoft Dynamics GP has reached end-of-life as explained in the following articles from the Microsoft Dynamics GP Support and Services team:

David Meego - Click for blog homepageWe are closing in on the start of the User Group Summit Australia in Melbourne with only 50 days to go before the conference, which runs between Wednesday 21st and Friday 23rd August 2019. There is also a pre-conference Partner only day on Tuesday the 20th August 2019.

I am really looking forward to this conference as it is the first time there has been a User Group event in Australia and the first time for many years that there has been any event for Microsoft Dynamics GP partners and customers.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageAnother thread on the GPUG forum prompted me to write this article. It is one that I have been meaning to write for a while as this is not the first time I have seen complaints that a Dex.ini setting does not work or is not behaving as expected.

This article explains the changes made in the recent versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP and how they could be causing the behaviour you are seeing.

David Meego - Click for blog homepageThis week a forum thread on the GPUG Open Forum caught my attention and I felt I had to respond. The topic was the future of Microsoft Dynamics GP and whether moving to Dynamics 365 is an option.

The fact that the question was asked again has prompted me to write another article to help get the correct message out to the Microsoft Dynamics GP community.
